In North Carolina there are eight American Indian tribes which include
one federally recognized tribe (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians) and
seven state recognized tribes (Meherrin Indian Tribe, Coharie Tribe,
Waccamaw Siouan Tribe, Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, Occaneechi Band
of the Saponi Nation, Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe and Sappony Tribe). See
map of tribe locations.
The total population for all tribal citizens including urban American
Indians who come to NC from tribes across the United States is over
140,000. The smoking rate for American Indian adults in North Carolina
is 28.6 percent. That means the smoking rate for American Indians is
higher than that of whites (17.6%), African Americans (19.9%), and
Hispanics (7.9%). Because of this, American Indian/Native American
smokers, are at high risk of suffering from smoking-related diseases
such as cancer, heart disease, lung disease and stroke.
